Hibiscus - I

After working on the portrait of my friend, I decided to try something completely different by choosing a subject that would allow me to focus on the painting aspect of my artwork instead of the drawing component.

The hibiscus at my mother's house blossomed into being this year, yielding a plethora of flowers — sometimes as many as three or four blossoms a day. As I mentioned with Il Mio Amico - I, I wanted to be able to capture more nuances through shading and shadow, without having to rely so much upon the drawing aspect to give the work its structure.

I began by outlining the hibiscus in pencil and then filling in with the watercolor afterwards. I feel like this is a solid first attempt at using an entirely different technique, and one that I should be able to apply to faces and fur for my human and animal subjects.
