Le Scale Mattone - I
After working on Il Pozzo Vicino Giocatoli - I, I decided to make some major changes to the way I approach watercolor. Not only was I careful to create a sepia-toned version for prints, but I also worked with a much lighter hand when applying color.
The color that I used for the bricks is the same as the one that I used in Il Pozzo Vicino Giocatoli - I, even though it looks like a completely different color — but such is the magic of watercolor.
I also experimented with several different ways of applying color to the bricks themselves, and the paving tiles as well. One of the things that I find fascinating about watercolor is its ability to convey texture without making the artwork feel too "tight" or "bunched up".
More than anything, I wanted the colored version of this piece to feel lighter, airier, and able to "breathe".
